ABOUT THE PROJECT

The purpose of the project "Strengthening national capacities for improving maternal and neonatal health in South-Eastern Europe" is to plan and implement policies and actions to strengthen the health systems in SEE for improving maternal and neonatal health, and to disseminate lessons learned.

The Project is a result of collaboration and concerted effort to reform health systems made by the nine countries of the South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) in cooperation with the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe and the Council of Europe in the framework of the Social Cohesion Initiative of the Stability Pact.

Improving Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Project was launched after Second Health Minister`s Forum for health and economic development in South-eastern Europe (Skopje, November 2005) when Norway delegation proposed an initiative for a project to reduce neonatal mortality in the region and declared readiness to contribute with political, technical and financial support to improve maternal and perinatal health. The idea was strongly supported by the SEE ministers of health and Moldova was proposed to take the lead role in the spirit of the SEE Health Network.
